WHY MAY 5TH?

On May 5th we celebrate our freedom in The Netherlands. We celebrate that we were liberated in 1945 from the German occupation in Europe and the Japanese occupation in Asia and that we have since been free from war and oppression in The Kingdom of The Netherlands. May 5th is also a day to reflect on the importance of liberty and to realize that freedom is vulnerable. In The Netherlands many have fought and even died for liberty.

The end of World War 2 didn’t mean there came an end to war in the world. Daily people are suffering from armed conflicts and violation of human rights. In many places in the world people are fighting for their mere existence. May 5th is also the day where we reflect on unfreedom elsewhere in the world.

In Groningen we celebrate freedom at Bevrijdingsfestival (Liberationfestival) since 2001. It’s been since held in Stadspark in Groningen and has free admission for everyone. At Bevrijdingsfestival there is always something to peak your interest: music, art, theater and great amounts of food and drinks. In addition, much thought and attention is given to the theme ‘Pass on freedom’. We co-organize debates and activities with Amnesty International and Stichting Vluchteling. The festival starts at noon and goes on until midnight. May 5th is an event of substance, which is celebrated by thousands. And all of this with and thanks to you!

CARRY THE TORCH

Freedom is valuable and vulnerable. The torch sticker is a symbol for commemorating on May 4th and celebrating our liberation and freedom on May 5th. By wearing the torch you show the importance of commemorating and celebrating. You can get this sticker at the Crew Office.

Join in, carry the torch and pass freedom on!
